This image brings to mind a long path through nature when it seems like we’ll never reach the destination or a resting place. Recently I was walking a path to a waterfall in Blue Ridge, Georgia. People said, “It’s just a quarter mile. Easy!” It was a rough but trodden path which I loved. After a while, some people came along going back down. I asked if I was almost there, hoping I was. They said, “No.” Ha! I was ready to turn back. But instead, I kept going forward without any need to arrive but just enjoy the exercise and beauty of the Fall leaves.
Finally, I arrived at the waterfalls called Branch Falls Branch. The name said it all. It was just a simple branch and the falls passed over a smooth stone wall. I’m told families like to slide down the falls like on a water slide into the pool below. I’m so glad I continued forward along the path even though I contemplated turning back, not because of the falls but because it felt so great to take such a walk in such a beautiful place.
The path forward is how I feel about my art practice. I just keep on making art and showing up and it becomes very rewarding and the arising challenges that often come end up so worth it.
